Andrew Kirby: Storytelling

United People: Peter Bolton — “It’s Been My Life, Hasn’t It Really?”

More than 5,000 matches. 44 countries. Half a century without missing a Manchester United first-team game at Old Trafford. But the numbers are only the beginning of Peter Bolton’s story.

There are some people whose lives become inseparable from the football club they support. Peter Bolton is one of them.

For the latest in my United People series for Republik of Mancunia, I sat down with Peter to talk about a lifetime following Manchester United.

The numbers are remarkable: more than 5,000 United games, 44 countries and an unbroken run of first-team matches at Old Trafford stretching back to 1974.

But what interested me most were the stories behind those numbers.

We talked about seeing George Best, following United around England and across Europe, the famous ONE LOVE flag, and the friendships accumulated over decades of trains, coaches, planes, pubs, terraces and football grounds.

We also talked about family: about Peter's dad taking him to Old Trafford, his wife Frances, and his great travelling companion Old John.

Because ultimately this isn't really a story about how many football matches one man has attended. It's about what happens when a football club becomes threaded through a life — connecting places, people, memories and generations.

Peter puts it rather more simply:

“It’s been my life, hasn’t it really?”
